BIO

John J. Knoernschild: From Turbulence to Tranquility

John J. Knoernschild knows how to transform life’s hardships into beautiful gardens.  John was born from East and West. Growing up in a tumultuous home, John’s German American father served 25 years in the Navy and was a devout Lutheran, while his Japanese mother struggled with the horrors of WWII. John discovered running as an outlet for his pent-up energy during his time at Jefferson Elementary School. In high school, he once finished a cross-country race despite losing a shoe, ultimately becoming a 12-time letterman in Cross Country, Wrestling, and Track and Field.

Instilled with a strong work ethic by his parents, John had a paper route and picked strawberries in the summer like many kids in the 80s. By high school, he owned a successful lawn-mowing company and bought his first home at 23. After facing trials that led to bankruptcy and homelessness in the winter of 1992, John sold his business and moved to Oregon in 1994, embarking on a spiritual quest at Multnomah University.

In 1996, John started a landscape business in Portland, Oregon with a $50 used lawnmower from his apartment. Over 26 years, he grew the business into a $200k annual revenue stream, helping several employees start their own successful companies and generating millions in additional revenue. As a real estate investor, John found success in buying and selling properties, believing that a successful home is a mindset.

John’s journey hasn’t been easy. He has battled anxiety and depression, finding solace in studying brain health under Dr. Amen. His experiences of homelessness, bankruptcy, and overcoming guilt have shaped his faith and principles. He trademarked the persona of the Garden Samurai—a spiritual warrior inspiring others to cut away mental vines and cultivate peace, prosperity, and protection.

As a certified life coach, John uses his experiences to inspire others to overcome life's weeds and build an internal garden of peace. He is passionate about bringing hope, healing, peace, and joy, stewarding what God has entrusted to him as a Kingdom Entrepreneur. Known as an award-winning 30-second specialist, John integrates training from the Word of God and other sources to connect with people of all spiritual beliefs.

Living in Oregon City, Oregon, with his wonderful wife of 30 years, John enjoys time with their two adult children, son-in-law, beloved rottweiler, (who just passed after 10 years) three grand dogs, and one grand cat. He is currently designing e-books and e-courses to help others build happy, healthy, peaceful, and prosperous life gardens.

Work Experience:

• 2008-Current: Garden Samurai Coaching and Consulting
• 1996-Current: Founder of Admirable Landscapes, LLC
  • Led sales, marketing, advertising, networking, office and field operations, teaching/training, consulting, and human resources.
  • Managed up to 10 employees, 4 crews, and various subcontractors.
  • Grew a business from a $50 lawnmower to a $250,000/year operation, injecting over $4 million into the economy and mentoring 4 employees to start their own businesses.
• 2016-Current: Manager/Independent Associate at Legal Shield (Part-Time)
  • Connect and encourage entrepreneurs, educate clients on legal and identity theft protection.
• 2013-2015: Host of radio show "Garden Samurai Wisdom"
• 1995-1996: Sales Associate at Home Depot, Inc
• 1994: Announcer for Basketball at Multnomah Bible College
• 1985-1993: Founded and operated a landscape business during high school
